How to approach it
1Lay three bands of colour
Yellow at the horizon, pink above it, dark blue at the top. Do not blend yet.
2Blend on the seams only
Work a clean dry brush back and forth where two colours meet, not across the whole sky.
3Dry completely before the silhouette
Black over damp sky pulls colour into it and turns grey. Wait until it is matte.
4Keep the silhouette pure black
No detail, no highlights. The contrast is what makes the sky glow.

What colours make a sunset?
Yellow, pink and dark blue with white to soften. Orange is mixed from red and yellow rather than bought.
Why does my sunset look muddy?
Usually over-blending, or blue dragged too far into the yellow. Blend only where two colours meet and stop early.
